The AWD12 works in three modes: metal, live AC cables and foreign objects, mainly wood. It detects ferrous metal to a depth of 120 mm, copper to 100 mm, live cables to 50 mm and wood to 38 mm in deep mode. A signal strength bar, the ‘Center’ icon and three-colour LEDs indicate when the object is directly beneath the centre of the detector.

Metal type symbol on the display
Magnetic and non-magnetic metal symbols usually let you tell a steel bar from a copper pipe or cable, while the absence of both symbols most often indicates a metal alloy.
Metal depth on the display
During scanning the detector shows the depth of the detected metal - most accurately for a steel bar or copper pipe 18 mm in diameter, and as an approximate value for other objects.
Edges and centre of the object
In foreign object mode the ‘Edge’ and ‘Center’ icons mark the edges and centre of a timber stud behind plasterboard or plywood.
